The Active Calvings
By boat it’s possible to get relatively close to the glacier to observe the active calving events. The blasts are huge, and the sight of icebergs spilling into the water is a completely unique experience.
Travelling north along the coast from Ilulissat, the boat sails past Bredebugt, the village Oqaatsut and the large fjord system Paakitsoq, where you may be lucky to see whales and seals frolicking. The cruise continues up through Ataa Sound, which is surrounded by high, steep mountains, bird life and waterfalls.
Upon arrival at Eqi Glacier, the ship spends a couple of hours at a suitable distance in full view of the glacier front, so you can observe the calving.
The guide on board will talk about Eqip Sermia while you enjoy lunch amid magnificent surroundings, with plenty of opportunities to take photos. This excursion is a full day trip, where you really have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the experience and enjoy sailing in Greenland’s magnificent nature.
Practical Information
- DURATION: This is a full day excursion. Travel time each way is 2-5 hours (depending on the type of boat). In addition, the boat cruises approx. 2 hours by the glacier front.
- SEASON: The trip takes place in the summer period from mid-June to September. Remember warm clothes. It’s cold on the icefiord in both summer and winter.

NOTE: The ship typically also has guests on board travelling to/from Glacier Lodge Eqi. If you’re also interested in extending the trip with accommodation and the possibility of hiking in the Eqi area, you can book your stay with World Of Greenland.
