Disko Bay is known for its icebergs, but in summer there are often as many whales as icebergs. They can be found around the whole Disko Bay region at this time, sometimes close to the town, other times in the ice fjord or up north at Arveprinsens Ejland.
In summer, the humpback whale, minke whale and fin whale are the most numerous species. The humpback whale is the acrobat among the great whales, despite its huge size up to 18 metres and 30 tonnes. When it breaches, it can launch its whole body out of the water and strike the surface with its tail and fins. It is easy to recognise by the bump on its back and its long white fins.
During the trip, we’re in constant radio contact with local fishermen and hunters, who keep the crew up to date with the latest whale sightings. In the summer months there are really good opportunities to see whales in Disko Bay, so remember your camera with charged batteries and extra memory cards!
